And so it has arrived, the most important game of Gregg Berhalter’s tenure as USMNT coach, as the tournament hosts face Uruguay in the Copa América group stage final in Kansas City on Monday.

If the USMNT does not improve on the result that Panama achieved in the group stage final against Bolivia, this extremely talented US team will not be able to qualify from a group where they were expected to, at the very least, finish second and challenge the impressive Uruguay by Marcelo Bielsa. for first place.

Things didn’t go as planned after the 11th ranked USMNT lost 2-1 against 43rd ranked Panama in Atlanta on Thursday, putting themselves in a very difficult situation in Group C. Of course, the ridiculous red card Tim Weah’s early attack had a massive impact on the game, but Berhalter’s team still coughed up a late goal to lose and now put themselves one defeat away from potential humiliation. Two years after the home World Cup, this was supposed to be the tournament where this talented group started and Berhalter showed us what he is capable of.

As for Uruguay, well, they have been exceptional in their two games so far, defeating Panama 3-1 and defeating Bolivia 5-0. Darwin Nunez is on fire, Federico Valverde is the heart and soul of this team in the middle -pitch and Bielsa’s high-pressing tactics are putting opponents off. He is creating another masterpiece, but he will not be left out in this game, as he was suspended by Uruguay, leaving late for the second half of both games so far.

The only hope the USMNT really has is that Bielsa (who will likely sit in the stands in his beloved bucket) rests some of his key players before the round of 16. Still, a USMNT win against Uruguay is a big ask. We’re about to see if this USMNT team is capable of defeating an elite team, something they haven’t done under Berhalter since he took over in 2018. If the USMNT doesn’t win, it could finally be the end for Berhalter.

Uruguay vs USMNT Live Updates – By Nick Mendola

Uruguay vs USMNT Live Score: 1-0

Top scorers: M. Olivera (66′)

Goal by Mathias Olivera! Uruguay 1-0 USMNT (66 minutes)

Uruguay has a free kick on the right.

Ronald Araujo beats Tim Ream and Turner saves with a header.

But the ball is placed by Mathias Olivera, who is – pending a long VAR review – in play.

Bolivia draws against Panama!

As it stands, the USMNT advances to the round of 16.

USMNT at it and Scally struggling with injury

Will we see another USMNT change 10 minutes into the second half?

Scally looks like he can’t continue and Shaq Moore is preparing to replace the Borussia Monchengladbach player.

But Scally will try to play.

Half-time – Uruguay 0-0 USMNT

An absolute brawl with three yellow cards, one forced injury substitution for each team, 13 fouls and just four shot attempts.

The xG is 0.53-0.01 in favor of Uruguay, while possession is 50:50.

It was quite a watch, but Balogun’s departure hurts. Uruguay has Luis Suarez, Brian Rodriguez and Rodrigo Bentancur on the bench.

The Yanks could turn to Haji Wright, Josh Sargemt or Malik Tillman. They need to win, as Panama leads against Bolivia. The Bolivian draw was annulled.

Darwin Nunez yellow while Scally shaken

Darwin Nunez outwits Joe Scally, bringing the American down near the touchline.

He will see yellow – the first for Uruguay.

Scally continues to undergo treatment, but will remain in the game at least until half-time, which is approaching.

Kristoffer Lund and Shaq Moore are the centre-back options on the bench unless Berhalter drops McKennie or Musah from midfield or moves Ream to left-back or Richards to right-back.

Balogun appears

Gregg Berhalter has to make a switch as Folarin Balogun rises, grabbing his hip after pressing to recover the ball.

Ricardo Pepi enters in the 41st minute.

Pure chaos

Chris Richards brings down De la Cruz and receives a yellow card.

Uruguay makes a quick restart while the referee removes the card…. and he lets it go forward!

Matt Turner is defeated, but Tim Ream makes a heroic recovery to clear the danger for a throw.

Penalty controversy as Folarin Balogun falls

Folarin Balogun is brought down by Ronald Araujo in the box and the striker and Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet are left shaken.

Balogun was offside at the entrance, so the penalty is coming, and he will continue in the game.

Bolivia scored. 1-1. USMNT now in progress if nothing changes.

Scary injury when Ream collides with

Uruguay’s players are feverishly calling for coaches after a nasty collision following the team’s first corner.

USMNT full-backs Tim Ream and Maximiliano Araujo were involved in the incident, and Araujo is being carried off the field with a neck brace.

LAFC’s Cristian Olivera takes Araujo’s place.

Panama scored against Bolivia. As it stands, the USMNT is on its way out.

Tyler Adams sees yellow

The USMNT midfielder catches Olivera, who catches him too.

It’s a yellow card shown to Adams in the 17th minute.

Some corners in the USA and a chance on the counterattack

If you have any questions about the commitment and desperation of the USMNT players, they should be answered by this display.

The Yanks won two corners and Giovanni Reyna put in a decent cross that was met by Rochet.

It’s only 14 minutes, but the table is set for a solid win-or-lose performance.

This… is already… a street fight

Wow. Both teams have shot out of traps and tackles are flying in from angles.

Weston McKennie and Maximiliano Araujo tangle near the endline in the opening minutes and Antonee Robinson hits Facundo Pellistri.

What’s at stake tonight?

While we can’t guarantee that Gregg Berhalter’s job will be on the line tonight – the Yanks could play very well against Uruguay and still lose – his stock could certainly use a win over a good team not named Mexico (which isn’t exactly in a golden generation). After all, the USMNT narrowly escaped a straight World Cup group and lost to Panama here.

But not getting past the group stage would leave doubts until the World Cup. After all, they won’t be playing against strong teams and certainly not in important matches considering they are already heading into the 2026 World Cup as hosts. He would be really it was good for Berhalter and the boys to get a win on the big stage over a top-20 team.

Uruguay lineup

Rochet, Nandez, R. Araujo, Olivera, Vina, Ugarte, Valverde, De La Cruz, M. Araujo, Pellistri, Nunez

USMNT Lineup

Turner; A. Robinson, Ream, Richards, Scally; Adams, McKennie, Musah; Reyna, Balogun, Pulisic

Uruguayan national team news, focus

Luis Suarez, Rodrigo Bentancur and Giorgian de Arrascaeta could start, while Ugarte, Valverde and Nunez could rest. Still, whatever team Uruguay field is packed with incredible talent and Bielsa will be eager to win the game and qualify as group winners as the prospect of facing Brazil in the quarter-finals seems a bit easier than facing Colombia now. At the moment Uruguay seems to be the best team in this tournament and together with Argentina they are the favorites to win it all.

USMNT Team News, Focus

Obviously someone is replacing Weah and it should probably be Yunus Musah to give the USMNT some extra solidity in midfield. That would mean a midfield trio of Adams, McKennie and Musah, with Pulisic and Reyna up front and Balogun leading the way. Will this happen? Probably not. We could see Musah or McKennie starting on the right, with Luca de la Torre or Johnny Cardoso moving into midfield, while Brenden Aaronson could also start on the right in a direct swap to stop all of their changes. All of this sums up what a nightmare it was to lose Weah to that red card, as the right is an area where the USMNT don’t have much depth. In defense, the four Robinsons, Ream, Richards and Scally should continue. Matt Turner’s injury is a big issue, so Ethan Horvath will come in if Turner is unavailable and the Cardiff City goalkeeper looked shaky against Panama.

Uruguay vs USMNT Prediction

The USMNT will do its best to resist and make things difficult for Uruguay, but it will be extremely difficult for the USA to match the pace and speed of play of Bielsa’s team. It will be tighter than many expect, but Uruguay will get the job done and the USMNT will have to hope for a favor from Bolivia. Uruguay 2-1 USMNT.
