The Premier League has rejected Leicester City’s PSR appeal, meaning a points deduction could be applied ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Leicester were accused of breaching Prem spending limits in March.

Club officials immediately launched an appeal, but it was rejected this week.

One official statement read: “An independent commission has rejected Leicester City FC’s challenge that it does not have jurisdiction to consider an alleged breach of the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs).

“In March, the Premier League referred the club to the independent Commission over the alleged breach.

“Leicester City subsequently challenged the Commission’s authority to hear the case.

“The alleged breach relates to PSRs from the 2022/23 season when the club was a member of the Premier League.”

The EFL also intends to hit Leicester with a separate charge for excessive spending on the way to winning the championship.

Based on the punishments handed out to Nottingham Forest and Everton last season, the Foxes face a significant points deduction – possibly up to 12 points.

The Foxes lost championship-winning manager Enzo Maresca this summer to Chelsea, who also recently bought Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in a £30m move.

Premier League sides deducted points and others at risk

Nottingham Forest

Four points deducted during the 2023-24 season for breaching the Premier League spending limit by £34.563m. The appeal was rejected and the decision was upheld.

Everton

The initial 10-point deduction for Premier League breaches in 2021-22 has been reduced to six points on appeal. Two more points were deducted later in the 2023-24 season. He appealed, but it was withdrawn after Prem survived.

Sheffield United

They have received a two-point deduction for their finances during the 2022-23 EFL season. Will start 2024-25 Championship season with -2 points after Prem relegation.

OTHERS WHO MAY FACE PUNISHMENT…

City of Manchester

The Etihad club emphatically denies the 115 allegations made against them in February 2023. The Commission’s lengthy case is scheduled to begin in October or November, but a final decision is not expected until March or April 2025.

Chelsea

Blues bosses have exposed illicit payments made to agents and others during the Roman Abramovich era. Fined £8.6m by Uefa but still not charged by the Prem despite an ongoing investigation.

Leicester

The Foxes breached Prem PSR loss limits last season but did not have to report their 2022-23 accounts until this month due to relegation. This delays the schedule and means they are likely to face a Prem points deduction for the 2024-25 season upon their return to the top flight.

Everton (again)

The Toffees are once again at risk of breaching PSR rules and are racing against time to raise funds and balance the books. This could not only lead to another indictment, but also to the administration. This would lead to an automatic nine-point deduction for the 2024/25 season.

They appointed former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper last month ahead of what is expected to be a turbulent return to the top flight.

Former Brighton manager Graham Potter was in contention to take charge of the club, but negotiations ended in failure.

Arriving at the King Power Stadium, Cooper said: “I am very proud to be joining a club with a rich history and I want to firstly thank Khun Top for the opportunity to manage Leicester City.

“I recognize that I am joining a group of people who love this club and want the best for it.”
