Spain wins dramatic quarter-final with goal in the last minute of extra time
Top scorers: Elm 51′, Merino 119; Wirtz 89′
Spain reached the EURO 2024 semi-finals with the most dramatic last-minute goals, which saw them win 2-1.
This despite La Roja suffering an early blow, as Pedri suffered a strong tackle from Toni Kroos and had to be substituted after just seven minutes.
Both teams struggled to gain a foothold in the game in the first half, but it was Pedri’s replacement Dani Olmo who opened the scoring, latching onto a perfect pass from Lamine Yamal and finishing into the bottom corner.
Unai Simon was forced into a great save after Robert Andrich’s long-range effort, before Niclas Füllkrug hit the post from Florian Wirtz’s cross.
Germany continued to advance and Kai Havertz almost found Simon with an audacious shot that would have been an excellent goal had it not gone over the bar.
With just a few minutes left in the contest, Toni Kroos crossed to the far post, which was headed by Joshua Kimmich and hit into the bottom corner by Florian Wirtz.
In extra time, Wirtz shot inches wide of the post before Spaniard Marc Cucurella handled the ball inside the box, but it was not considered a penalty.
The game took another dramatic turn when Spaniard Mikel Merino stood up, hovered in the air and headed in a brilliant goal as the tie headed towards penalties.
A breathtaking end to the game saw Füllkrug almost level the scores with a brilliant header that went inches wide, and Dani Carvajal was sent off in the final seconds, but it was Spain who took their place in the semi-final.
