ALAN SHEARER led viewers’ fury when a “totally shocking” decision cost England in a cagey quarter-final against Switzerland.

Many fans were convinced that referee Daniele Orsato missed a “blatant handball” when Swiss midfielder Remo Freuler raised his arms following a dangerous cross.

And although it was an improved performance from the Three Lions, that moment in the 33rd minute was one of the few opportunities of the first half.

BBC analyst Shearer and commentators questioned how Freuler escaped punishment.

And fans were also surprised that Orsato waved play on – and then didn’t give up when there was no advantage for England.

The controversy arose when Kobbie Mainoo advanced from midfield.

The Manchester United midfielder reached his peak when passing the ball to Kieran Trippier on the left.

The Newcastle full-back used his stronger right foot to shoot the ball in a threatening manner.

But Freueler, just outside the box, appeared to deliberately raise his arms.

The English players immediately appealed – but in vain.

Orsato was a few meters away – but his vision seemed slightly obscured.
