Old Palmer

GARETH SOUTHGATE labeled Cole Palmer a “fearless old man” after the Englishman confidently scored his penalty in the shootout win over Switzerland, writes Dylan Terry.

Chelsea’s Palmer, 22, scored the first of the Three Lions’ five penalties in Dusseldorf as they won 5-3 in the shootout after a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.

Bukayo Saka, England’s best player, also recovered perfectly, three years after conceding a penalty in the Euro final against Italy.

And Southgate, 53, began discussing the penalty shootout by praising the Arsenal player.

When asked by the BBC about Saka, he said: “So brave. Look, he’s one of our best, so we never had any doubt he’d take one.

“But we all know what he went through [so] deliver like he did.”
Southgate then turned his attention to the other buyers – Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Ivan Toney and Trent Alexander-Arnold – before hilariously describing the Chelsea ace.

He added: “But not just him. Trent, Ivan to come and get them like they did.

“Cole, he’s like an old man, not like that, he’s fearless.

“Such a great performance, great result for us, and we’re still at it.”
