Man United agree huge fee to sell Mason Greenwood to Marseille

Manchester United agreed to pay a fee of £26.7 million to sell Mason Greenwood for Marseille. The forward is expected to leave Old Trafford provided he agrees to the French club’s personal terms as part of a deal that includes add-ons and will give United a sell-on clause.

Greenwood, who has not played for United since January 2022, has also attracted interest from a number of other clubs including Lazio, Juventus and Napoli.

He met with United’s new hierarchy at Carrington on Monday, when United stressed they thought it best for him to continue his career elsewhere.

Greenwood spent last season on loan at Getafe, scoring 10 goals, after being suspended by United for 19 months following his arrest in 2022.

He was charged with attempted rape, assault causing actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behavior by police, although these charges were later dropped after a witness withdrew his cooperation.

United conducted an internal investigation when former chief executive Richard Arnold concluded he should not play for the club again, although Sir Jim Ratcliffe appeared to suggest the decision would be re-evaluated after he acquired a 27.7 per cent stake.

But United had targeted Greenwood, who scored 35 goals in 129 games for the team, as a player to sell this summer in the hope of raising funds to strengthen their squad. Marseille, who are now managed by former Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, have submitted the biggest offer United have ever received.
