Wolves had a 1-0 lead when trouble arose in the 68th minute.

Players from both teams were involved in a fight before Podence was caught punching an opposing defender, which led to the 28-year-old receiving a red card.

The incident began after Wolves striker Hwang alleged that a Como player had racially abused him.

It is not suggested that Podence punched the Como player, accused of making racist comments.

This led to the furious response from the Wolves team, and stars and coaches from both sides spoke for several minutes.

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil spoke to Hwang and offered him the opportunity to withdraw from the match.

But the South Korean was determined to continue and play the full 90 minutes.

O’Neil said: “Channy heard a racist comment which is really disappointing.

“I spoke to Channy about it, checked if he wanted to leave the team or go out on his own, but he was interested in the team continuing and getting the work he needed.

“It’s really disappointing that this happened, that we had to talk about it and that it impacted the game – it’s not ideal and things like this shouldn’t exist.

“He’s really disappointed, of course, and understandably so.

“I’m proud that he wanted to move on and put his team first at a difficult time for him.

“He knew it was a pre-season trip and wanted the boys to work and earn minutes, even though they suffered something extremely offensive.

“Channy will be fine, he will have our full support and we will pick him up in the morning and make sure he is OK.”

He added: “It’s a tight-knit group. Of course there are ways to deal with this and we don’t want to run out of space on the field, but it’s a united group.

“We worked hard this week, we had a good week, we had some great moments in the game, but it’s an unfortunate incident that we have to deal with and discuss when ideally we would be talking about the game.

“Of course, when an incident like this happens in a game, it’s the first thing we discuss.”

A statement from the club confirmed: “Racism or discrimination in any form is completely unacceptable and should never be left unchallenged, and Wolves will lodge a formal complaint with Uefa over the incident.”

As of this writing, Como has yet to make any public comments on the incident.

Matt Doherty scored the only goal of the match to earn Wolves a 1-0 victory in their first pre-season match.
