GARETH SOUTHGATE will not be targeted to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, reports say.

Southgate stepped down as England coach following a 2-1 defeat in the Euro 2024 final to Spain.

He had long been linked with the United job as Ten Hag appeared to face an uncertain future.

But after a summer of deliberations, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Old Trafford board decided to stick with the Dutchman.

Southgate is admired by Ratcliffe & Co at United but can no longer be a target for Ten Hag’s replacement in the future.

Instead, former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel would be considered next in line for the job, according to the Daily mail.

This is despite Tuchel already interviewing Ratcliffe for the role this summer, only for the deal to fall by the wayside.

The pair met in Monaco but it is believed Ratcliffe felt the German needed a break from football.

Tuchel won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 before being sacked a year later.

He then moved to Bayern Munich and won the Bundesliga in 2023 before leaving at the end of last season.

Tuchel is believed to want to return to England for any suitable Premier League job.

But, as revealed by SunSport, he is also open to taking the England job.

Graham Potter is currently the favorite to succeed Southgate, having not returned to management before being sacked by Chelsea last September.
