MANCHESTER UNITED have released a brief 57-word statement confirming Mason Greenwood’s transfer to Marseille.

The 22-year-old touched down in France last night to finalize his departure from United in a deal that could be worth more than £30million.

The England striker will cost Ligue 1 giants Marseille an initial £27m plus £3.2m in add-ons.

United also have a 50% sell-on clause included in the package.

The Red Devils have now announced that his departure has been completed with a brief statement on their website.

It said: “Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and joined French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer.

“The 22-year-old English striker, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, has made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since making his debut in 2019.

“We wish Mason all the best in his future career.”

Greenwood, who Marseille revealed will wear number 10 in their official unveiling video, joined United’s development academy in Halifax, West Yorkshire, aged six.

He progressed through the ranks and made his senior debut in 2019 before becoming a regular starter.

But Greenwood was suspended by the club in January 2022 before being charged nine months later with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behavior towards a woman.

He denied the allegations, with all criminal charges being dropped in February 2023.

Greenwood was loaned to Spanish side Getafe last season and shone for the LaLiga side, winning the Player of the Year award.

His performances led to several clubs from across Europe seeking his services.

Greenwood was told he no longer had a future at Man Utd in a meeting with the club’s leadership team this month, and has trained individually during pre-season.

Marseille moved quickly to seal the deal – despite it being against the wishes of many fans who started a campaign called #GreenwoodNotWelcome.

Marseille mayor Benoit Payan also openly opposed the measure and said he would lobby club president Pablo Longoria to cancel it.

But De Zerbi, who came from Brighton, promised to “defend Greenwood” if he joined.

De Zerbi previously commented: “Greenwood hasn’t been recruited yet, so there’s not much to say.

“He is a champion, an international player.

“I don’t know what happened, I’m not focusing on my private life.

“When a player signs for the club, I consider him my son.

“Even if I manage to pull his ear in private, I will defend him publicly. My players are like my children.”

Meanwhile, Greenwood won’t have to wait long to return to England – and his hometown.

On August 3, Bradford-born Greenwood could see action for Marseille in a friendly with League Two side Bradford City’s Sunderland at Valley Parade.
