Greenwood, who spent last season on loan at Spanish club Getafe, has signed a contract until 2029.

Last season was his first return to the field since being suspended by Man Utd in January 2022, amid allegations of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behavior towards a woman.

All criminal charges were finally dropped in February 2023 after a key witness was removed.

Greenwood has always insisted he is innocent.

But this did not prevent his arrival in Marseille from being met with anger from some supporters, who launched a campaign called #GreenwoodNotWelcome.

And Marseille major Benoit Payan was also highly critical of the transfer, saying the club would be “covered in shame” if he joined.

Greenwood has now broken his silence on the fury, saying Provence: “Obviously, I am aware of this debate and understand the issue. I do not wish to enter into any controversy.

“I already had the opportunity to express myself on this matter last year, now it is behind me.”

Greenwood, who welcomed the world last week with girlfriend Harriet Robson, continued: “With my partner we have rebuilt ourselves together, as a couple, we have just spent a year in Madrid.

“We have been together since we were 15, 16 years old, today we have a beautiful little girl who has just celebrated her first birthday.

“Now I’m looking to the future and just focusing on Olympique de Marseille and our new life together in Marseille.”

Greenwood’s reinstatement at Man Utd was considered, but ultimately canceled after a backlash.

He then joined Getafe on loan, scoring eight goals in LaLiga last year.

The former England star previously said: “I understand that people will judge me because of what they have seen and heard on social media, and will think the worst.

“I was raised to know that violence or abuse in any relationship is wrong. I didn’t do the things I was accused of.

“However, I made mistakes in my relationship and I take my share of responsibility for the situations that led to the social media post.”

Meanwhile, their new manager Roberto De Zerbi is ready to strongly defend the signing of Greenwood.

The Italian coach said: “He is a champion, a world-class player.

“I don’t know what happened, I’m not focusing on my private life.

“When a player signs for the club, I consider him my son.

“Even if I manage to pull his ear in private, I will defend him publicly. My players are like my children.”
