FANS were left in an uproar after what appeared to be the worst VAR offside in history.

However, even more eyebrows were raised when it was revealed that not everything was as it seemed.

The introduction of VAR in football has managed to cause controversy almost weekly.

Last month, UEFA AXED the clumsy Argentine referee who ignored Scotland’s penalty claim against Hungary – AND their VAR – at Euro 2024.

In May, there was also a surprising moment when a referee ignored VAR’s recommendation and refused to send off players following chaos on the pitch in Argentina.

And there appeared to be even more chaos in the early hours of today when Puerto Cabello and Portugal played out a goalless draw in the Venezuelan league match.

In the 87th minute the deadlock appeared to be broken when a cross from the left was met by the outstretched leg of a visiting striker.

The celebrations were quickly cut short due to an offside flag when play resumed.

Those who watched the game on the Liga FutVe broadcast saw a replay that showed a line drawn to indicate offside.

But, incredibly, the line was completely diagonal and left some fans watching, in complete disbelief, at the VAR’s “lack of professionalism”.

“He was impeded in the fourth dimension,” joked one.

Another said: “That line went all the way to the 6th floor.”

A third commented: “What a speech. The ball could have gone to someone’s ground and headed it and that would have counted as a goal.

As a fourth wryly wrote: “Absolutely NOT rigged!”

However, as fans continued to jump on X to vent their anger at the crooked line, others emerged to shed some light on the matter.

One person posted this explanation: “I think it’s important to clarify that this was done by those responsible for the broadcast and has nothing to do with VAR.

“To the FutVe League broadcast directors, please don’t do this again. They display the product very poorly.”

And another revealed: “Important information: There is currently no VAR in the Venezuelan league.”

While a third added: “This was done by the broadcaster, there was no var in the game.”
