The Debrief on Leagues Cup action with Sunday’s return theme

More Leagues Cup action took place on Sunday when three games concluded the first round.

What happened

New York City FC managed to survive after breaking Querétaro’s hearts following a 0-0 draw. Luis Barraza’s penalty shootout heroics ensured the MLS side won and retained two points.

Elsewhere, two American teams faced off, with Sporting KC pulling off the first comeback of the night with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Fire.

The final performance saw the Portland Timbers come from behind against Club León thanks to two goals from defender Zac McGraw. The unlikely hero scored in the 90th minute to ensure the game finished 2-1 at Providence Park.

Moment of the night

We see shades of Robin van Persie in this game, as William Agada’s header saved Sporting KC in front of the home fans.

Player of the night

The easy choice is McGraw. Back in the starting lineup, two headers on the rise and his first two goals this season.

It’s the best response after coach Phil Neville criticized the Timbers for not scoring from corners.

What this means

NYCFC, Sporting KC and Portland Timbers are now at the top of their groups.

Looking across the entire standings, MLS teams continue to dominate, with 14 clubs currently occupying the top spots, compared to just one from Liga MX (Atlas).

What comes next

We’ll be back mid-week! The second round begins on Tuesday, when San Luis faces Montreal. Four other matches take place that night before the action continues on Wednesday and Thursday.
