Hosts France will face Argentina in the quarter-finals of Olympic men’s football, having progressed to the last 16 by beating New Zealand to top Group A.

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the first goal for a dominant France, who registered an impressive 34 shots to New Zealand’s nine.

Mateta gave them the lead in the 19th minute and New Zealand quickly found themselves under relentless pressure as the hosts looked to add to their tally.

They managed to hold out until the 71st minute, but the Kiwis’ defense eventually gave way and Desire Doue scored from close range, before Arnaud Kalimuendo fired at the post three minutes later.

France finish the group stage with victories in each of their three games, following victories over the United States and Guinea.

Six of the quarter-final finalists have been confirmed and the final two will be known after Israel takes on Japan and Paraguay takes on Mali at 8pm BST.

Argentina, Spain, Egypt, Morocco, United States throughout

On Tuesday morning, a stunning goal from Thiago Almada helped Argentina for a 2-0 victory over Ukraine in Group B.

Almada attacked the Ukrainian defense before scoring from around 25 yards out. Claudio Echeverri then scored a shot.

But Morocco topped Group B after a 3-0 victory over Iraq as they finished tied on points and goal difference with Argentina, but beat the South American team in their opening game.

O USA advance alongside France in Group A due to goal difference after winning Guinea 3-0, with the final day’s results finishing ahead of New Zealand.

In another place, Spain suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat against Egypt and finished runners-up in Group C, with their opponents overtaking them to reach the top.

It took Spain until the last minute of normal time to reduce, with Samu Omorodion’s response coming after two goals from Ibrahim Adel.
