Hull KR produced an excellent display to overtake Warrington Wolves and reach the top of the Super League.
They were quicker out of blocks and then showed dogged defense to inflict a first defeat in six games on Wolves.
The result puts them top on points difference, ahead of champions Wigan Warriors, who have a game in hand against Leigh Leopards on Tuesday (8pm BST).
Samoa duo Sauaso Sue and Tyrone May scored tries in the first half, with Mikey Lewis and Peta Hiku crossing in the second to confirm two points for the Robins.
Warrington, for whom Matty Ashton scored the only try, dropped to third with this result, having started the week in first place.
Super League’s next forces
Going into this match, Warrington had won five in a row, as well as having the best attack in the league and the stingiest defense – the perfect combination.
The feeling that something is being built at Halliwell Jones Stadium is tangible and even more so with the news that manager Sam Burgess extended your contract until 2026.
But the same can be said of Hull KR, who were beaten in last year’s Challenge Cup final and look well placed to improve on fourth place and record their best-ever Super League campaign.
Since losing the Cup semi-finals in May, Willie Peters’ side have won eight of their nine games, with their only defeat coming in a golden point game to the Catalan Dragons.
The Robins did not appear intimidated by Warrington’s big wins over St Helens and Wigan in the previous two games and took the game to the hosts from the start.
Prop Sue drove between two defenders to land just yards away, before her international team-mate May added the second score, while Lewis launched a teasing shot for his centre-back partner to bounce off Wolves full-back Matt Dufty , to play below.
It could have been more as two attempts were ruled out by video referee Liam Moore.
Warrington then thought they had found a way back into the game when Josh Thewlis ran in to score, but after a long delay it was ruled that prop Luke Yates had crashed while completing a tackle on Lewis, who had lost control of the ball.
There was further frustration after Josh Drinkwater appeared to have gone down but Hull KR’s excellent defending prevented him from getting the ball away.
The visitors continued to repel Warrington’s attacks after the break, with Lewis making an attempted save on center Rodrick Tai.
But the pressure mounted when Ashton went over from the corner to put his team on the scoreboard after a good miscued pass from Dufty.
Even so, the visiting team doubled their lead when Lewis’ shot was knocked down by Ryan Hall and the defender reacted quicker to the loose ball and dived over the line.
That score took Warrington down and it was up to Hiku to add late brilliance to the score with a classic center try.
It is the first time this season that Hull KR have been top of the table, but with seven games to go, they have shown that they should be considered genuine contenders for the League Leaders’ Shield and a place in the Grand Final at Old Trafford. on October 12th.
Hull KR assistant manager Danny Ward told BBC Radio Humberside:
“It was an excellent performance – very, very enjoyable. I hope it was a good game to watch because it was very nervous at times here.
“Warrington gave their opinion and they are a fantastic team and you have to enjoy nights like this. Seeing Rovers fans going crazy behind their sticks is truly a spectacle.
“It was a nice victory, we had to try really hard. They put a lot of pressure on our line, certainly in the first half, so a big rap for the boys today, they were fantastic.”
