Concerns about what the club might do if Luke Shaw is unable to play could be over as Amass proved himself more than capable during the tour in USA.

The 17-year-old Londoner came through Watford’s academy before United paid a fee to capture the highly-rated youngster and bring him to Carrington.

He was called up to train with the first team last February and was given a place on the bench for the FA Cup game against Liverpool and represented England at under-15, under-16 and under-16 level.

But he is really targeting the first team at Old Trafford, and with the injury problems that have affected him Tyrell Malacia and Shaw, he can make it and save United money in the transfer market along the way.

He feels ready and looked pre-season games on this US Tour against Arsenal and Real Betis.

Amass said: “Anything can happen at any time. Injuries happen and you just need to take the chance when it happens.

“This pre-season is an opportunity to prove that, if I am chosen, I can do it. We’ll obviously see what happens when Luke and Tyrell return.

“My intention is to play for the first team soccer in this club.

“I think if the opportunity arises, I have to grab it with both hands, it could change my career. I’m just waiting for that moment, I’m ready.”

Amass is a fully active winger in the Shaw mold and provided the assist for Amad’s goal in the 3-2 win over Real Betis.

He said: “I’m comfortable with the ball, I like dribbling a lot, I like facing players, I like encouraging the crowd, playing exciting football.

Marcus Rashford is seen after Manchester United star is injured against Real Betis in pre-season friendly

“On the ball, in preparation, it’s not a problem.

“Obviously it’s out of the question that you need to work hard, make sure you’re 100 percent into it.”

The 5-foot-9 rising star isn’t afraid to put her foot down, either.

He said: “Just show your aggressive side, you may be young, smaller than the opponent, but you have to show that you are aggressive and not back down. Then you can have a good game.”

He also reached an immediate understanding with the revitalized Marcus Rashford on the left, which the teenager attributes to his teammate’s talent.

He said: “Playing with him makes everything ten times easier, he’s an incredible player, playing with him as a winger is easy.

“Link-up play, he understands, he understands my game immediately.”

With his confidence and ability, it is no surprise that comparisons are already being made with Shaw, who did not feature for United due to the injury he picked up in February.

Amass said: “It’s a good comparison. On my opinion one of the best left-backs in the Premier League, if not the best in a long time.

“So I’m not going to complain about the comparison.”

Erik ten Witch has been good at bringing in young players in his two years at United, such as Alejandro Garnacho, Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo, and is confident of doing the same with Amass.

Ten Hag said: “We all see potential here like what we saw in previous years, for example Garnacho last season.

“We had that last season with Kobbie.

“He’s not that far away now at this point. If we train him well, if we train him well, then in three months it is possible that he will be at that point.

“Right now he needs to update himself and develop some skills to play Manchester Unitedcompeting for the highest positions in the league.

“But with great talent he can rise very quickly and it will be very interesting to see if he is capable of doing that.”

A packed Old Trafford could soon discover just how capable he is.
