A NASA (United States Space Agency) published on its social networks this Tuesday (6) a selfie taken by the Perseverance rover. The image shows the vehicle on Martian soil next to Cheyava Falls, a rock where it is collecting information to bring to Earth.
In the caption, the agency explained that this is a rock that could provide clues about the possibility that Mars may have harbored microscopic life in the distant past. You can see a small hole from where the robot took a sample and a white spot, a place that was abraded to study its composition.
The selfie taken on July 23 — the 1,218th day of the Perseverance mission — is a composite made up of 62 images taken by the camera at the end of the rover’s robotic arm.
“Measuring 1 meter by 0.6 meters and named after a Grand Canyon waterfall, Cheyava Falls is situated on the northern edge of an ancient river valley carved by water that flowed into Jezero Crater long ago,” NASA described. in the caption.
On February 18, the Perseverance rover arrived at the surface of the red planet to search for signs of life, in the present or past. The probe was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at the end of July 2020. To reach the neighboring planet, the vehicle traveled 470 million kilometers.
