NASA (United States Space Agency) said this Wednesday (7) that the astronauts hosted on the International Space Station (ISS) launched by Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, may return to Earth with SpaceX’s Crew Dragon in February 2025, if the initial transport is still considered unsafe to return to Earth.
The Starliner mission began in June, transporting two astronauts to the ISS in a highly important test necessary for NASA to certify Boeing spacecraft for routine flights to the Space Station.
Initially designed to last about eight days, the mission was extended due to a series of problems with the spacecraft’s propulsion system that Boeing and NASA have struggled to fix.
These problems have cast doubt on Starliner’s ability to safely return to Earth with its crew — veteran astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. NASA has been analyzing whether a Crew Dragon capsule will have to bring them home.
