In recent years, several models of artificial intelligence (AI) were made available to the general public; in addition to options that use language processing models, such as ChatGPTthere are also tools that use generative visual models to create images and videos. For example, you can create hyperrealistic art without knowing how to draw anything.

You can create everything from the most basic drawings to illustrations so realistic that they look like real photos — and you can download the images and use them as you wish. THE Midjourney and the DALL·E are two of the most popular AIs that offer this possibility to users, but there are many other options available.

Although it is not necessary to know how to draw, those who understand drawing, art and photography techniques are more likely to achieve higher quality results. All you need to do is write a suitable prompt (command) for the artificial intelligence to understand the task. A command prompt is an instruction or description that you give to an AI so it understands what it should do. The more detailed and specific the prompt, the better the result.

To explain step by step how to create images in some of the most popular image generators, CNN has produced three tutorials that simplify the process.

Midjourney

Despite being one of the most used image generators on the market, Midjourney is quite simple. As it does not have its own interface, the arts are created on a chat platform server Discord. Currently, there are no free options.

The basic plan ($8) offers a private chat to create up to 200 command prompts per month. Higher plans offer different amounts of hours for rapid image generation, as well as a slower, unlimited generation option.

How to generate images in Midjourney

  • Create an account on Discord;
  • Access the Midjourney website, click on ‘Login’ and select the Discord icon to access Midjourney;
  • Midjourney is no longer free, so you must subscribe to an annual payment plan. Locate the channels dedicated to creating images on the left side of the screen, such as ‘#newbies-103’, type ‘/subscribe’ and press the ‘Enter’ key. Click on ‘Manage Account’ and select the desired plan;
  • From the home screen, click the Discord icon in the top left side of the screen. Select the ‘Midjourney Bot’ option. It is in this private chat that you can start generating your images;
  • Write ‘/imagine’, press the ‘space’ key and type the description of the image. Press ‘Enter’ to send the command and Midjourney will present four image options;
  • Below the images, you can refine them through an options menu.

DALL·E

DALL-E is the DALL-E image generator. OpenAIthe same company responsible for the ChatGPT language processing model. The latest version available is DALL-E 3. To access the tool, you must subscribe to the ‘Plus’ plan, which costs US$20 (around R$110) per month.

How to generate images in DALL·E

  • Go to the OpenAI website and log in with your account. If you don’t have an account, register;
  • If you don’t have a Plus subscription, click in the bottom left corner of the screen to access the upgrade page. Complete the subscription;
  • On the ChatGPT home page, select ‘Explore GPTs’ and choose Dall-E;
  • Now, just open the command prompt and start generating your images. If you don’t like the result, you can make changes using other text commands. Only one image will be generated at a time.

Since August this year, the company has made the image creation tool available for free on the ChatGPT home page, but it is only possible to create up to two images per day this way.

Microsoft Image Creator

THE Microsoft Designer Image Creatororiginally called Bing Image Creator, is an AI tool capable of generating original images through text commands. Image Creator offers a completely free option; In total, users can create up to 15 prompts per day.
