Worldwide shipments of desktops and laptops rose 3% year over year in the period ending in June, according to a report released Tuesday by IDC, an industry research firm. Apple and Acer Inc., which posted a jump of about 14%, had the biggest growth in shipments among major manufacturers.

“Two consecutive quarters of growth, combined with a lot of market excitement around AI PCs and a less attractive but possibly more important commercial upgrade cycle, appears to be what the PC market needed,” wrote Ryan Reith, vice-president. president of the IDC group.

The PC industry has suffered historic declines in recent years after consumers, businesses and schools bought new machines during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, and then delayed replacements. Computer makers have touted AI PCs, a new type of device designed specifically to perform artificial intelligence tasks, as helping fuel a new wave of upgrades. IDC said that only about 3% of PCs sold this year will be optimized for AI.

Dell Technologies Inc.’s shipments declined 2.4% in the quarter, making it the only major company to report a decline, while Lenovo Group Ltd. commanded the largest market share with nearly 23%. HP Inc. recorded a 1.8% increase over the previous year and was the second largest PC maker with 21% of the market.

Weak demand in China hurt global results – excluding that country, worldwide shipments grew more than 5%, IDC said.
