Netflix is testing a major redesign of its TV app’s home page. The new look replaces static tiles containing the shows and movies you want to watch with boxes that extend as soon as the remote lands on them.
It’s a change from how Netflix’s existing home page works, which currently displays a title’s trailer and other information at the top of its interface when you scroll over it. The new design, on the other hand, consolidates things – making all the information you’re looking for much more prominent on the screen.
Hover over a TV show or movie long enough and Netflix will start playing a brief preview right on the tile. Below the box you will find all the information about a title, including its synopsis, year of release, number of episodes and genre.
“We often see members performing gymnastics with their eyes as they survey the at-home experience,” says Pat Flemming, senior director of product at Netflix. On the edge. “We wanted to make it easier for members to find out if a title is right for them.”
That’s not the only thing Netflix is changing about its appearance. The update eliminates the menu that appears on the left side of the Netflix home page and replaces it with a more streamlined selection of options at the top of the screen: search, home, shows, movies, and My Netflix. Fortunately, you won’t have to scroll to the top of Netflix just to access the new menu; Flemming says you can simply press the back button on the remote.
The new menu also reduces some of the options previously available in the left-side menu, including the “Categories”, “New & Popular” and “My List” tabs. But that he does Add My Netflix, the tab Netflix first launched on its mobile app last year, which offers content recommendations and quick access to titles you’ve recently watched or saved. You can still access “Categories” in the search tab.
The company will test the new home page among a small group of subscribers who use smart TVs and other streaming devices to get started, but Flemming said On the edge It could expand to more members if it goes well. “If all goes well, which we are excited and hope it will, we would love to share this with the broader membership base in the coming months and quarters.”
