A product of Google’s Area 120 incubator, Stack was one of those forgotten gems that was simply useful: it let you create or import PDFs and store them in different categories it called Stacks: tax, insurance, medical, etc. The app took data from the PDF to suggest a title, added searchable details like the document’s date, the amount (if it was a receipt), or the organization that issued it, and there was also a field for adding notes.

According to Google support page, “Stack functionality has been incorporated into the Google Drive app.” As someone who used Stack to easily save and find multiple PDFs that I needed quick access to, I could argue against that, but hey – it’s not like Google isn’t known for its graveyard of abandoned apps.

If you use Stack to create and track your PDFs, you’ll want to move some – or all – of your documents. Google suggests you move them to Google Drive and has built a feature into Stack to make this an easy two-step process:

When you access Drive, you will find a folder called Stack Export; all your PDFs will be inside this folder. Unfortunately, if you’re a Stack user and you’ve carefully categorized and labeled your PDFs, you’ll find that it was a wasted effort – the folder will simply contain all the PDFs without any additional categorization or text included.

If you don’t want to keep your documents in Drive, the easiest thing to do is upload them all to Drive and move them from there. However, you can also export them from Stack wherever you want; it’s just a more arduous method:

After moving your PDFs out of the stack, you can access the app Settings > Delete page to get rid of all those carefully organized documents.

Finally, from someone who really liked this particular app: thank you very much, Google.
