Florida’s digital ID app suddenly disappeared

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) turn off your digital ID app, Florida Smart ID, for iPhones and Android phones. The department emailed users asking them to delete the app and said it is looking for another vendor to help it revive the service in “early 2025.” according to 9to5Mac.

The state promoted its Smart ID app as a contactless way showing proof of age or identity in stores or when speaking to the police, but this is now over. According to a report from the South Florida Sun Sentinel Last year, few people used it, with just 95,000 activations among more than 17 million licensed drivers, and many police departments also said they didn’t use it.
