Discord is introducing new monetization tools and features that aim to make it easier for app developers to earn money by selling premium perks on the platform’s storefronts. After launching support for premium app subscriptions Last year, Discord is halving the 30% platform fee for the first $1 million developers earn in cumulative gross sales.
Described in its announcement blog as a new level of “growth” for Discord monetization terms, the 15% rate will be available from June 6th. The communications platform is also adding the ability to offer one-time purchasesallowing developers to sell products like games, cosmetic skins, and other premium assets without requiring a subscription.
They can be provided as one-time purchase “durable” SKUs – which offer permanent benefits – or consumables that may expire or run out. Developers can now also list their creations via a new store surface, which can be found in the app directory or Discord profile. These changes follow the company’s decision to pivot its app back to gaming, after previously trying to develop into a more widespread chat app during the pandemic.
All of these new tools are currently being rolled out in the US, UK and European Union, but will be expanded to other regions “later”. Support to allow Discord developers to offer multiple subscription levels for their products is also being developed, although Discord has not mentioned when this will be available.
