Instagram is introducing a way to live stream to a smaller, more private audience.

Starting today, Instagram users will be able to host live streams available only to their select list of close friends. Up to three other accounts can join the live stream and stream with the original user. The feature is rolled out globally.

Up until this point, starting a live stream meant anyone could tune in and watch if your account was public, and all followers could watch the stream if you had a private account. Live videos are a popular feature for influencers and celebrities who talk to followers or fan accounts that broadcast live footage from concerts – in other words, content more aimed at broad audiences and for public consumption.

The ability to live stream to just a small group of people seems closer to a giant FaceTime call than a public live stream — and in fact, the example use cases offered by the company are decidedly more intimate. A user might start sharing influencer content like shopping or “get ready with me” videos without judgment from certain followers, for example, or organize a study session with some friends.
