PLAYSTATION fans are breathing a sigh of relief today after Sony announced a major turnaround following a tumultuous weekend for the company.

Drama erupted over the weekend when it was revealed that Helldivers 2, a game published for PlayStation, would force PC players to use a PSN account, potentially locking out some fans.

It’s not uncommon for PC games to require third-party accounts, even when purchased on Steam, but this time things are a little more complicated.

The main problem was that, despite advertising that PSN login would be required, the requirement had been deactivated since the game’s launch in early February.

This is largely due to the game’s massive success, which required developer Arrowhead to turn off some network functions, like PSN logins, to ensure a smooth experience.

Since then, neither publisher Sony nor developer Arrowhead have mentioned restoring the third-party login requirement.

When Sony announced that this would soon be required, players were furious, flooding the game’s Steam page with negative reviews.

Players have also taken to social media to give negative feedback, with Arrowhead’s social media managers dealing with a lot of unfortunate abuse.

To make matters worse, the game has been sold in almost every region on Steam, including even those where PlayStation accounts are not legally available.

After this issue was brought to the forefront of the drama, Sony removed the game from sale in more than 170 Steam regions, making it appear to many that the requirement is here to stay despite the backlash.

In a shocking turn of events, however, Sony backtracked on the demand today, providing a statement on social media confirming that the plans had been cancelled.

The PlayStation account said: “Helldivers fans – we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update.

“The May 6th update, which would require linking Steam and PlayStation Network accounts for new players and current players starting May 30th, will not move forward.”

Sony says it is listening to feedback and will keep players updated on future plans for Helldivers 2, which will likely include many updates.

Helldivers 2 was released for PC and PS5 in February to rave reviews, and has been played by tens of millions of players, many of whom are on PC.
