MARVEL is preparing to launch a new PvP hero shooter to rival the likes of Apex Legends and Overwatch.

Developed by Netease, the team offered a select number of streamers and influencers a first look at the upcoming game, Marvel Rivals, with a closed alpha test.

It’s standard practice at these preview events for attendees to sign contracts like NDAs about what they can show their audience and what they can talk about.

This usually includes things like plot points or, in games like this, certain characters and weapons that the team hopes to announce later.

However, professional League of Legends player Brandon Larned has denounced the ‘No Disparagement’ clause in the Marvel Rivals contract.

The contract clause says: “The content creator agrees not to make any public statements or engage in discussions that are harmful to the reputation of the game.

“This includes, but is not limited to, making derogatory or satirical comments about any game-related material, such as game features, characters, or music.

“Engaging in malicious comparisons with competitors or disparaging the gameplay or differences of Marvel Rivals or providing negative reviews of the game.”

It’s not uncommon for streamers to get paid for this type of content, and these types of clauses, unfortunately, are not uncommon when it comes to online content creation.

However, this is often not public knowledge and players can be influenced to buy the game without knowing about these clauses.

Netease apologized for the “miscommunication” with streamers.

A statement detected by Eurogamer says: “We are aware that there are inappropriate and misleading terms in the pledge to share non-derogatory content.

“We sincerely apologize [sic] for the lack of communication and your unpleasant experiences!

“Our stand is absolutely open to suggestions and criticism to improve our game. It is us [sic] Our mission is to make Marvel Rivals better satisfying players with these constructive suggestions.

“We are now working on reviewing [sic] the miscommunication terms of our commitment.

“Progress will be shared with all creators in a timely manner.”

Streamers, including Larned, have already started streaming Marvel Rivals and it’s unclear if the deal has changed.
