Last year, Microsoft completed the deal to buy publisher Activision Blizzard for a staggering $69 billion.
It was the biggest acquisition ever in the gaming industry, and one of Microsoft’s main reasons for buying the company was to acquire its King mobile division.
King is best known for the Candy Crush series, one of the most popular game series of all time.
Microsoft has been talking about a mobile gaming app for several years where gamers can play original Xbox games on the go.
While the app hasn’t been released yet, that will change soon.
Speaking with On the edgeXbox President Sarah Bond says: “This year we will launch our first mobile offering, where mobile gamers can find deals on their favorite in-game items and discover new games, starting on the web so gamers can access them anywhere. place.
“This web-based store is the first step in our journey to building a trusted app store with roots in gaming.”
Bond announced that this web-based version will be released in July 2024, with plans to upgrade it to a mobile app later.
At the Bloomberg Technology Summit, Bond made further comments on the matter, saying: “We will start by bringing our own primary portfolio to [the Xbox mobile store]so you’ll see games like Candy Crush appear in this experience, games like Minecraft.
“We’re going to start on the web and we’re doing this because it really allows us to be an accessible experience on every device, in every country, no matter what and regardless of closed ecosystem store policies. ”
The type of app store she describes would rival Apple’s App Store and Android’s Google Play, but would only feature mobile games.
