An increasingly rare piece of gaming history has been found locked in a garage.
The item dates back about two decades — and could one day be worth thousands, players say.
Posting on Reddit, the finder he wrote: “I found an unopened PS2 in the garage. Is that worth anything?
“I’m not a PlayStation person. I probably would have been if I had gotten this when it was purchased instead of it being forgotten for two decades. What do I do with it?”
Other players asked the owner to keep the PlayStation 2.
The original PS2 was released in Japan on March 4, 2000, followed by an October 26 release in the United States of the same year.
This particular version has the model number SCPH-77001 which means it was part of the PS2 slimline release falling in love back to late 2004.
According to the box, this is a Satin Silver version, launched in 2005 in Europe and arrived in North America in 2006.
One fan wrote: “Keep it for another 15 years and then sell it.”
Another said: “Save it for a few more decades. It may seem like a long time ago, but the PS2 was two decades ago.
One noted: “Save it, it’s a really cool collector’s item. It will be worth something in the future.”
And another added: “Keep it and it will be worth thousands later.”

The value of an old PlayStation 2 can vary greatly in terms of quality.

That rises to about $163 if it’s a complete boxed offering, or $556 if it’s “new” and unopened.

The value of this particular Silver Slim PlayStation 2 appears to vary slightly from the standard PS2.
PriceCharting notes that the individual value is $116, a complete unit in the box is worth $191, and a new unit can cost around $700.
And professionally rated, the unit has an estimated value of $999.

But whatever the current price is, it will certainly increase as sealed units become rarer.
Sony began selling the slim case design in 2004, promising a smaller, thinner, quieter alternative to the bulky original PS2.
However, this also meant that the 3.5-inch HDD expansion bay was removed.
