PLAYSTATION has revealed the next AAA title in its catalog that will arrive on PC later this year.
The announcement was made at last night’s State of Play showcase, but there is one detail that some viewers may have missed during the presentation.
The massive title is now open for pre-orders on Steam, but many fans have noticed that a recent requirement will once again prevent some players from purchasing it.
God of War Ragnarök will be released for PC in September 19, 2024but like other recent versions of PlayStation exclusive games, it will require Steam players to sign up for a free PlayStation Network account.
PSN accounts are currently only available in around 70 countries, which effectively makes the game unavailable to players in over 120 other countries and territories who use Steam.
The requirement may come as a surprise to Steam owners of the 2018 game God of War, which was released for PC in 2022 and did not require a PSN account.
Multiplayer co-op shooter Helldivers 2 was Sony’s first PC game to feature this, but after backlash from players, PlayStation reversed its decision.
At the time, players thought Sony wouldn’t add the same requirement for future releases, but Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, released for PC on May 16, also asks for a PSN account.
Because of this, before the release of Ghost of Tsushima, many players in countries without access to PSN noticed that their pre-orders for the game were refunded.
Now, the God of War Ragnarök Steam store page also states that a PSN account is required for the upcoming game.
The requirement was confirmed during last night’s State of Play showcase, as eagle-eyed players noticed at the start of the presentation.
A notice before the show began said: “Sony Interactive Entertainment PC games require a PlayStation Network account.”
Previously, the PSN account boost was justified for multiplayer games or single-player titles that also include multiplayer like Ghost of Tsushima.
With God of War Ragnarök, a single-player game with no online multiplayer elements, it’s clear that the demand for new PlayStation releases on PC is here to stay.
Sony’s tough stance on PC owners linking a PlayStation account probably won’t sit well with gamers, especially those from countries where PSN isn’t an option.
