THERE’S a trend these days of turning some of the best video game stories into wildly popular TV series.
Following the success of HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime Video’s Fallout, another iconic game series is getting a TV show adaptation.
Amazon announced on Tuesday that it is making a live-action series based on Sega’s popular Like a Dragon games, formerly known in the West as Yakuza.
Titled Like a Dragon: Yakuza, the upcoming show will debut in October 25 on Amazon Prime Video.
The live-action series will have an original story set in the same period as the first Yakuza game, released in 2005.
The protagonist of most Yakuza games, Kazuma Kiryu, will also be the main character in the Amazon adaptation,
The story will follow his life in 1995 and 2005, before and after being arrested in the games.
Like the games, the series will take place in the fictional district of Kamurochō, in Tokyo, Kiryu’s hometown.
Prime Video’s upcoming show is directed by acclaimed Japanese director Masaharu Take.
Ryoma Takeuchi, best known for his role in the superhero series Kamen Rider Drive, will play the lead role of Kiryu in Like a Dragon: Yakuza.
The program will have six episodes, released in two batches of three, in October 25th and November 1st, 2024.
