ROCKSTAR is one of the largest game developers in the industry, creating two of the biggest and best IPs in the world.

As the developer of the Red Dead and Grand Theft Auto series, it is home to some of the best-selling games of all time.

Recently, TV and film fans have seen increased interest in gaming following excellent video game adaptations like The Last of Us and Fallout.

The popularity of these shows has raised the question: why don’t we have movies or shows based on Rockstar games?

Speaking with The Ankletstudio co-founder Dan Houser explains what happened when executives approached him about a film deal.

Houser said: “After a few awkward encounters, we would ask [the executives]why would we do that?

“Their response [was]’because you can make a movie.’

“And we would say, no, what you described is that you are making a film and we have no control and we run a huge risk of ending up paying with something that belongs to us.”

At the time of these discussions, films based on video games were known for their low quality.

These films were known for having low ratings and often failed at the box office.

While fans often asked for live-action versions of Rockstar games, Houser didn’t want to take that risk with its IPs.

He continues: “They thought we would be blinded by the lights and that was not the case.

“We had what we considered to be multibillion-dollar intellectual property and the economics never made sense. The risk never made sense.

“At that time, the perception was that games produced low-quality films.”

Houser left Rockstar in 2020 to create a new studio called Absurd Ventures.

He admits that “now is a different time”, suggesting that those currently working at Rockstar could now have a different view.
