A WEEK after Nintendo released a scary teaser trailer for an upcoming adult game, the company has finally answered its own question.
The trailer titled Who is Emio? it featured a short video of a man wearing a paper bag with a demonic smile drawn on it.
Fans later discovered Emio’s Australian age rating, confirming that the game will have strong themes of violence and suicide.
People expected Emio to be a horror game from companies like Bloober Team, known for Layers of Fear, or Koei Tecmo, known for the Fatal Frame series.
However, Nintendo has now confirmed that the game is being developed in-house and produced by Yoshio Sakamoto, best known for the Metroid series.
Emio – The Smiling Man is a new entry in one of Sakamoto’s other popular series.
The full title is Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club as the next entry in the series.
The first Famicom Detective Club game was released in 1988, but a two-pack of the first two games was re-released in 2021.
Emio will be the third game in the series, where you will play a detective investigating a mysterious serial killer.
Murders following the same pattern as an 18-year-old cold case start to appear, and you have to figure out if it’s the same killer, a copycat or something else.
Emio – The Smiling Man will also be released sooner than people expected, as it will be released next month.
There will be digital and physical editions of the game released exclusively for Nintendo Switch on August 29, 2024.
People can now watch a short video with Sakamoto on YouTube explaining his ideas for the new entry.
