Warframe CEO criticizes companies that shut down live service games, claiming they ‘throw away’

WARFRAME is one of the oldest and most popular live service games of all time, having lasted for over a decade.

However, when it comes to successful games like this, it seems to be a dying breed, as support for many live service games drops shortly after launch.

It’s an incredibly competitive market and if your game doesn’t reach players right away, they’ll move on to something else.

But the situation can be reversed, as No Man’s Sky, Fallout 76 and Final Fantasy 14 proved after disastrous launches.

Despite these few late successes, many companies will cancel their games shortly after release.

In an interview with VGCSteve Sinclair, CEO of Digital Extremes, had a few things to say about studios pulling the plug on their live service games.

Sinclair said: “They think the launch is all or nothing, but it’s not.

“They have a financial way of being persistent and they never do it.

“It comes out, it doesn’t work and they throw it away.”

Exoprimal is one of the latest live service games to end support, as Capcom said it will recycle seasonal content just a year after launch.

He added: “Isn’t it a shame when you dedicate so many years of your life iterating these systems, building technology or building the start of a community, and because the operating costs are high, you get scared when you see the numbers drop and you go although.

“We’ve seen that with incredible releases that I think have huge potential, and I think they were released too early.”

We doubt other companies will take Sinclair’s advice to heart, but it would be nice to see live service games have more longevity.
