ASSASSIN’S Creed as a series is about exploration, stealth and secret killings.
Each game in the series is set in an area during a time of historical significance, such as Victorian London or Paris during the French Revolution.
While real historical events may be depicted, such as the assassination of Julius Caesar, Ubisoft often adds its own fictional twist.
In Assassin’s Creed 2, protagonist Ezio takes part in a fight with the Pope under the Vatican.
Assassin’s Creed depicts some historical events, but they always have a sensational, action-packed feel.
Despite Assassin’s Creed’s history of bombastic plots, people criticized Ubisoft after watching the Assassin’s Creed Shadows trailer.
Much of the criticism surrounds the casting of protagonist Yasuke, a real-life servant of Oda Nobynaga who originally came from Africa.
Although the other protagonist is a fictional ninja named Naoe, people went crazy for introducing Yasuke without maintaining historical accuracy.
People complained that they wanted to play as a Japanese samurai instead of Yasuke, and complained that playing as Yasuke wouldn’t feel historically accurate.
Ubisoft has now responded to the criticism, reminding players that the Assassin’s Creed games are works of fiction.
The statement reads: “Since the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, we have received a lot of positive reactions, but also some criticism, including from you, our Japanese players.
“Our intention has never been to present any of our Assassin’s Creed games, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, as factual representations of history or historical characters.
“Assassin’s Creed Shadows is, above all, designed to be a fun video game that tells a compelling historical fiction set in feudal Japan.
“Based on the constructive criticism we have received, we will continue our efforts until we get this game into your hands – and beyond.”
