The masked torchbearer, who led the audience through the four-hour duration Paris 2024 opening ceremony, looked quite familiar to fans of the Assassin’s Creed series.

The hooded figure that roamed the rooftops of Paris carrying the Olympic flame was seen by many as an unmistakable nod to the popular gaming franchise.

The Assassin’s Creed series has been around for over 15 years, and both parkour and hooded protagonists have been the basis of its gameplay and story.

One of the entries in the series, which turns 10 this year, Assassin’s Creed Unity, takes place in Paris during the French Revolution.

Savvy gaming viewers were quick to point out that the masked torchbearer looks a lot like Arno, the game’s protagonist.

As Arno Dorian, players spend hours traversing the game’s detailed version of revolutionary Paris, which includes the most faithful reproduction of the city’s Notre Dame Cathedral in a game.

In 2019, after a fire destroyed parts of Notre Dame, publisher Ubisoft made the game free for 10 days and announced a contribution of £433,000 towards the monument’s rebuilding efforts.

The detailed 3D model of the game’s famous church was used as a reference during restoration work.

The fact that the series’ publisher is a French multinational also fueled fan speculation that the segment is in fact an homage to the games.

A post on Twitter/X from the official Assassin’s Creed account, teasing Arno’s appearance on the rooftops of Paris, all but confirmed fan theories.

Although it is not an official appearance by the brand, the apparent reference to video games at such an important event delighted fans.

Some have even called for the masked torchbearer’s exact outfit to be included in the Assassin’s Creed games.

If you’re looking for more gaming news, here’s how GTA 6 could be affected by the ongoing voice actor strike.
