This is the first game in the Mystery Dungeon series, one of the most popular spin-offs in the Pokémon franchise.
Pokémon Ranger and Pokémon Snap have their fans, but few Pokémon spin-off series have had as many entries and fan love as the Mystery Dungeon games.
As the first game in the series, Red Rescue Team is the first game that many people have played, so it holds a special place for them.
Unlike the main Pokémon games, Mystery Dungeon is a dungeon crawler where you play as a Pokémon instead of a trainer.
You and a partner Pokémon will enter challenging multi-story dungeons, with the chance to recruit other Pokémon along the way.
Adding an extra level of difficulty to the game, you cannot evolve any of these Pokémon until you beat the main game.
Since you start out as a fairly weak Pokémon like Skitty, Cubone, or Meowth, this means it can be particularly challenging.
While it may seem pointless to evolve your Pokémon after finishing the game, Red Rescue Team has a very robust post-game that is much longer than the main story.
The post-game highlight is Purity Forest, a 99-level dungeon where you can use any Pokémon you’ve recruited, but you have to start at level 1.
If you want to try Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, you’ll first need to be a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscriber.
Next, you need to download the Game Boy Advance app from the Nintendo eShop and select the game you want to play.
