Google just created Chromecasts. In a post on TuesdayGoogle says it is “ending Chromecast production” after more than a decade of selling streaming dongles.

While Chromecast devices are now available “while supplies last,” Google says it will continue to push out software and security updates for its latest devices, without specifying which ones. The most recent update to the lineup was the Chromecast with Google TV launching in 2022.

But now, Google says “the technology has evolved dramatically” since the launch of the original Chromecast in 2013. “We’ve invested heavily in incorporating Google Cast technology into millions of TV devices, including Android TV,” Google writes. “We’re taking the next step in the evolution of how TV streaming devices can add even more features to your smart TV, built on the same Chromecast technology.”

In place of the Chromecast, the company will offer the recently announced $99.99 Google TV Streamer, which will launch on September 24th. The set-top box comes with some significant specs over the Chromecast with Google TV, like a 22% faster processor, along with Thread and Matter integration.

While the Google TV Streamer is a huge upgrade for the Chromecast – and could finally even rival the more expensive Apple TV 4K – it’s a shame that Google is getting rid of its dongle. Priced at just $29.99, Chromecast with Google TV gives you basic access to a full streaming hub.
