Google Maps is becoming even more like Waze

Google is updating its two navigation apps – Google Maps and Waze – with a series of new features, including some changes that bring the two closer together.

One of the big updates here continues to integrate Waze’s biggest features directly into Maps. Maps is getting improved incident reporting, similar to Waze, which adds larger icons to share updates like road closures, construction, speed cameras or police presence. Other drivers will be asked to confirm incidents with one tap.

It may seem like Waze and Google Maps are on a collision course, but the two applications remain separate. Google Maps product chief Can Comertoglu said On the edge at a press conference on Tuesday that Waze users are very dedicated. “They prefer some of the things Waze does to Google Maps, and we know the reverse is also true.” Waze has more than 500,000 employees, Waze director Tim Queenan told us.

The Google Maps service is also adding new destination directions that will identify a building’s entrance as you approach it. The feature will identify the exact building you are navigating to, highlighting it in red, with a green indicator pointing to the building’s main entrance. Google will also start showing nearby parking lots.

Enhanced incident reporting is now rolling out to Google Maps on Android, iOS, Google-integrated cars, and Android Auto and Apple Carplay, while destination guidance will roll out “in the coming weeks.”

Not to be overshadowed by Google Maps, Waze is also gaining some new tricks. Waze users can now report new types of traffic cameras, like those that go off if you drive in the bus or HOV lanes, or those that check for seat belts and whether you’re texting and driving.

Waze also has a new dedicated event information experience that can inform you about road closures due to happenings in the area, like a marathon, concert, or ball game. You’ll receive a push notification after the first road closure for an event near your business or home address, or somewhere you’ve recently driven. The new feature will launch with the 2024 Olympic Games and future events.
