At Build, Microsoft just announced “Volumetric Windows Apps in Meta Quest,” a way to “extend Windows apps into 3D space.”

Details are scarce, but the company showed off a digital 3D exploded view of an Xbox controller from the perspective of a Meta Quest 3 headset, a digital object that you can manipulate with your hands – and says its software partner Creo It took a single day to bring this interactive visualization to Quest.

Microsoft says developers can sign up for developer preview today, which will give you access to an unnamed “volumetric API.” The form you’ll fill out makes it look like it’s early:

Microsoft is looking for developers who produce or provide plug-ins for 3D Windows desktop applications or customers working with 3D applications in Windows desktop applications who are interested in extending these applications to 3D content with mixed reality.
