GOOGLE has confused Android users with a bizarre new ‘audio emoji’ feature that interrupts phone calls.

Gone are the days of silent emojis — Google is trying to popularize a new generation of emoticons nearly three decades after its inception.

Audio emoji allow users to answer calls with sound-assisted animations within Google’s Phone app.

There are six different audio emojis to choose from:

  • Drum roll
  • Sad
  • Applause
  • Party Popper
  • Laughter
  • Coconut

If you’re not already familiar with the feature, imagine this: your friend gets a promotion and you complement your congratulations with an applause audio emoji.

If they look like messenger emojis, that’s just the beginning.

But Android users are struggling to find fun in the new feature.

“Why the hell do we need this?”, a viewer asked on X (formerly Twitter).

Other added: “Literally unnecessary, instead of creating features like Apple’s live voicemail, they waste time on it.”

A third person simply called it “Another useless resource to kill in 3 months.”

Where did the emoji come from?

Emojis as we know them emerged in the late 1990s in Japan.

Telephone companies were inspired by symbols used in manga and Japanese weather forecasts.

Initially, there were around 90 emojis on the J-Phone in 1997.

In 2010, the number increased to almost 1,000.

Today, that number stands at more than 3,500 emojis – with companies like Apple and Google introducing new symbols every year.

Before they reached phones, text-based symbols like 🙂 and 🙁 were popularized with the advent of the computer.

We know that the Google Phone app has been receiving audio emojis since late February.

Reliable leaker site TheSpAndroid discovered the code in a beta version of the phone app.

It’s unclear whether Google has plans to improve the feature or release more audio emojis.

Google’s annual developer conference, Google I/O, is happening in a few weeks, so we might get more information.
