ANDROID owners have been warned they may lose the ability to pay with their smartphones next month.

Google Wallet is used by millions of people every day to shop and travel.

The company routinely updates gadgets and technology with newer features behind the scenes – and that often means older devices fall behind.

And the latest change to Google Wallet will do just that.

Starting June 10, your device will need to be running Android 9 or higher to continue using Google Wallet.

After this date, the popular service will no longer work for you.

Android 9 – also known as Android Pie – was released in 2018, so the vast majority of people shouldn’t be affected.

Anyone using an earlier version – like Android 8 or lower – will need to update their software to continue using Google Wallet.

Your device might run on Android 9, in which case it’s a pretty easy software update.

However, anyone with an old smartphone is no longer eligible for free Android software updates, meaning they will have to buy a new phone.

It’s also worth pointing out that Android 8 hasn’t been supported by Google since October 2021, so your device should have been updated a long time ago to keep it safe from hackers.

“To help keep Wallet features like tap-to-pay transactions more secure, we must be able to push security updates to your device,” Google wrote on a support site.

Google should increase setup speed – but it’s not enough for Android fans

“Security updates are not available for Android versions below 9.”

Anyone with an older Wear OS smartwatch will also be affected.

You will now need Wear OS 2.x or higher to continue using Google Wallet.

If you’re not sure which version of Android your smartphone runs, follow these simple steps:

  • Go to settings
  • Find About Phone at the bottom of the page
  • Go to Android version
