The point isn’t an error – it’s actually a shortcut to access Apple’s suite of AssistiveTouch technology options.

By clicking the dot, users can easily go to the notification center, control settings, or other custom destinations.

Sometimes the option can be activated on a device by mistake, causing annoyance to unsuspecting people.

An iPhone user complained about the spot in a recent Reddit post, where he asked other users to explain how to get rid of it.

“How do I turn off this annoying floating point on iPhone?” bsodimike (you/bsodmike) titled a recent post on the iPhone thread (r/iphone).

“It’s activated on my sister’s phone. She must have called,” they explained.

They called the feature “annoying” and asked for help finding a solution.

The Reddit community quickly helped resolve the issue.

“Accessibility Go to settings and use the search, ‘Accessibility’. I think it’s called Assistive Touch. It’s there,” one person replied.

Other Apple fans said they had dealt with the issue before.

A life-saving trick for iPhone owners

“Oh yeah… that spot,” one user commented.

“I was looking for ‘bloody floating point,’” the original poster wrote with laughing emojis after learning of the error.

DESIGNED TO BE CUSTOMIZED

Apple’s AssistiveTouch feature aims to help users customize iPhones to meet their specific needs.

You can use the option to lock the screen, restart the device, adjust the volume, use multi-finger gestures or replace pressed buttons with just one tap.

Other menus and controls that can be added include:

  • Control Center
  • Notification Center
  • Spotlight
  • Home
  • App Switcher
  • Speak screen

The ‘floating point’ that has confused users can actually be dragged across the screen to be placed wherever is most convenient for the user.

Tapping the button once opens the AssistiveTouch options menu, and clicking outside the menu closes the option.

iPhone Tricks to Try Today

Here are some of the best…

  • Typing cursor – When typing, hold down the spacebar to turn your keyboard into a trackpad, allowing you to move words and sentences more easily
  • Close all Safari tabs – To do this in one go, simply hold the overlapping squares in the bottom right corner and press close all tabs
  • Delete many photos quickly – Long press a photo and drag your finger diagonally across Photos to select multiple images at once and click delete
  • Convert currency quickly – Swipe down from the top of the home screen, tap the bar and enter a currency (like €200) and it will automatically convert to your local currency
  • Check if you need a battery upgrade – Batteries inside smartphones degrade over time. Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and check the Maximum Capacity reading. Generally, a battery is considered exhausted when its capacity is reduced to 80%. If it’s below, you can buy a battery change from Apple
  • Move apps faster – Hold an app until it starts to jiggle, then (while holding) tap other apps, making them stack so you can move them more easily

HOW TO USE APPLE ASSISTIVETOUCH

AssistiveTouch can be activated on your iPhone in a few different ways.

You can go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch and turn on AssistiveTouch.

The option can also be activated by telling Siri to “Turn on AssistiveTouch”.

Finally, iPhone users can try going to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut and turning on AssistiveTouch.
