Apple has published guidelines on its website for those who want to store their devices long-term.

So if you’re going to put your phone in a drawer or storage for a while, follow the advice.

“Two main factors will affect the overall health of your battery: ambient temperature and your battery percentage,” said the technology company he wrote.

“Do not fully charge or discharge your device’s battery – charge it to about 50%.”

Apple warns that if you store a device uncharged for too long, the battery will enter a “deep discharge state.”

Once the battery reaches this deep discharge state, it may not be able to hold a charge in the future.

However, storing your device with a full battery may cause loss of capacity, impairing its ability to have a long battery life.

When it comes to storage temperature, Apple recommends keeping phones in a cool, moisture-free environment with temperatures below 90°F.

Apple advises against exposing your device to extreme temperatures, whether you plan to store it or not.

“Your device is designed to work well in a wide range of ambient temperatures, with 16° to 22° C (62° to 72° F) as the ideal comfort zone,” Apple wrote.

Apple will pay Americans up to $349 in iPhone sale – you still have days to claim and no receipt required

“It is especially important to avoid exposing your device to ambient temperatures above 95° F (35° C), which can permanently damage battery capacity.”

Charging your device at high temperatures can cause irreversible damage, decreasing the average battery life of your device.

On the other hand, using the device in extremely cold temperatures may damage the battery only momentarily.

Apple writes that any decrease in battery life in cold temperatures will only be temporary.

“Once the battery temperature returns to the normal operating range, its performance will also return to normal.”

Apple has also provided useful hacks for MacBook users who want to preserve their device’s battery.

The technology company advises MacBook users to take advantage of the device’s power-saving setting.

“The Energy Saver preference pane includes several settings that determine your MacBook’s power levels,” Apple described.

“Your MacBook knows when it’s plugged in and works properly. When using battery power, it dims the screen and uses other components sparingly.”

If you are using your MacBook to charge other devices, Apple also advises users to plug in their MacBook while doing so.

A Brief History of Apple Charging Cable Changes

Here’s everything you need to know…

  • When the first iPhone was released in 2007, it featured a charging port designed from the ground up by Apple
  • This was called the 30-pin dock connector and survived in Apple devices for years
  • But in 2012, Apple introduced a new Lightning port for charging phones (from iPhone 5 onwards)
  • The move sparked outrage as it rendered everyone’s old charging cables useless
  • In 2019, rumors began circulating that Apple was planning to change the iPhone’s charging port a second time
  • Then in 2023, Apple switched to USB-C on the iPhone 15, as it did with the 2019 iPad Pro
  • USB-C now appears in most of Apple’s new gadgets
