With summer just a few weeks away, Apple has issued a warning to all iPhone users about a simple error that could seriously harm the battery life of their smartphones.

However, there are several actions iPhone owners can take to keep their device in tip-top condition for years to come.

As technology has continued to develop over the years, smartphones like the iPhone have become essential parts of many people’s everyday lives.

The devices are a portable hub for sending emails, messages, entertainment, social media, news, games and more.

There are few places where people tend to travel without their smartphones, as most keep them by their side all year round.

During the summer, there are a number of dangers that can damage iPhones when people take their devices to the beach, on a boat, or simply relaxing by the pool.

A mistake that many iPhone users may make is leaving the device exposed to the sun for too long.

Smartphones are designed to operate in temperatures as low as 32° and as high as 95° F, the device’s battery life can be seriously damaged if stored or operated outside this range.

There are several built-in warning signs that iPhone owners can look out for if the device’s internal temperature rises above normal.

The device typically displays these signals to regulate the phone’s temperature, according to Apple.

Apple has warned that if the temperature warning appears on the screen, it could prevent iPhone owners from using their devices.

If your smartphone is still struggling to control the internal temperature, the device can also go into deep sleep mode to cool down.

“Move your iPhone to a cooler location, out of direct sunlight, and wait a few minutes before trying to use your iPhone again,” recommends Apple.

iPhone users should also be careful when bringing the device near water sources such as lakes, beaches, or even swimming pools.

Why do batteries get worse over time?

Here’s what you need to know…

  • Most gadgets run on lithium-ion batteries
  • Over time, the amount of charge this type of battery can hold decreases.
  • This means you need to charge your device more often because they hold less charge
  • Batteries have two electrode points – the cathode and the anode
  • To charge a battery, ions inside the battery are forced from the cathode to the anode
  • When you use a battery, it moves in the reverse direction
  • This process wears down the anode structure, reducing its ability to function properly.
  • But the process also accumulates a type of salt on the cathode during charging.
  • As this buildup increases, the battery will accept less charge over time
  • It is estimated that between 500 and 1,000 full charge cycles will reduce the battery’s maximum capacity by about 20%.

Although most current iPhone models are built to be splash, water, and dust resistant, the devices can still suffer from water damage — potentially ruining their lifespan and battery power.

Apple recommends that users avoid swimming or showering with an iPhone or exposing it to pressurized or high-velocity water during activities such as water skiing, jet skiing, or surfing.

The company also encourages iPhone owners to never intentionally use their devices underwater or in saunas or steam rooms.

If you discover that your iPhone has been exposed to liquids, Apple suggests that users disconnect all cables and avoid charging the device for at least five hours until it is completely dry.

To protect your device, never dry your iPhone with an external heat source or by inserting an object such as a paper towel into the phone – as this may cause additional damage to your device.
