What is OnlyFans?

OnlyFans is a subscription content service based in London.

By 2023, it is estimated to have more than 220 million registered users and more than three million content creators.

Sex workers charge monthly fees for access to photos, videos and more.

Although popular for porn, the site wasn’t designed exclusively with that in mind – anyone who wants to build a fan base and charge for it can create one.

“Whether you are uploading tutorials, tips, behind-the-scenes footage or just endless selfies, many of your followers would be willing to pay for them,” the company states.

For every subscription sold to a viewer, artists receive 80% of the money, while OnlyFans keeps the rest.

It is not limited to adult content as it has become popular among fitness experts and musicians.

Is adult content prohibited on OnlyFans?

OnlyFans announced a big change in August 2021 – sexually explicit videos would be banned from October 21st.

More than 100 Republican and Democratic members of Congress have called on the US Department of Justice to investigate the platform over its content involving child sexual abuse.

On a Letter sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland, members of Congress accused OnlyFans of being “a major marketplace for buying and selling child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in the United States, as well as soliciting sexual activity with minors.”

I was so thin I stole food and relied on charity donations – now I’m a millionaire thanks to OnlyFans, says Kerry Katona

The letter cited research from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which found “an increasing amount of CSAM and child exploitation on OnlyFans.”

The company cited that the upcoming changes are due to pressure from banking partners and payment providers.

“To ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform and continue to welcome an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines,” the company said at the time.

But after a huge backlash from users and creators, the site reversed the decision before it took effect.

In June 2024, disgraced Congressman George Santos announced that he was creating an OnlyFans account for his followers.

Santos posted on his OnlyFans page that he will share “exclusive and unreleased content from the Congress Icon and much more!”
Many people were not impressed with his new venture.

Who founded OnlyFans?

The company was founded by Timothy Stokely in 2016.

“Uber is a complement to your car, just like OnlyFans is a complement to your existing social media,” he said. Wired.

Stokely, 38, graduated from Anglia Ruskin University with a degree in Property and Surveying and was once referred to as “the king of homemade porn” by The Sunday Times.

Before founding OnlyFans, Stokely ran a softcore porn site called GlamGirls and later created Customs4U, a platform where customers could request personalized videos from adult models.

Stokely then started the company with a loan of £10,000 from his father, Guy, who declared: “Tim, this will be the last one.”

His brother, Thomas Stokely, joined as chief operating officer, and Guy took on the role of chief financial officer at OnlyFans.

Two years after its creation, Leonid Radvinsky, owner of MyFreeCams, acquired a 75% stake in Fenix International Limited, becoming a key director.

Following this acquisition, OnlyFans increasingly shifted its focus to not safe for work (NSFW) content.

In December 2021, Stokely stepped down, handing over leadership to Amrapali Gan.

Keily Blair took over as CEO in July 2023.

What are OnlyFans accounts?

Adult entertainment workers post pornographic photos and videos on their accounts, which are behind a paywall. Customers then pay to view the content.

Users can charge $5 to $49.99 per month for subscriptions.

Outside of subscriptions, OnlyFans creators can also receive tips and set up paid private messages.

If you want to become a creator, you must be at least 18 years old to create an account.
