As the summer sun sets in, you may see an alert appear on your iPhone saying it “needs to cool down before you can use it.”

But there are two temperature-cooling tricks that could do more harm than good to your iPhone, an expert has warned.

If your device is in temperatures above 35º C (95º F), you will likely receive the above message.

This is when you will need to make an effort to cool it down.

But James Brown, director of the insurance company Protect your bubblewarned against two rapid cooling techniques that could damage your device.

“Our phones are rarely far from our hands, but during a heat wave it’s very easy for these devices to become dangerously hot, which affects battery life and can cause the device to temporarily shut down,” he said.

“Even if your phone has the highest water resistance rating, it’s a bad idea to submerge your phone in cold water to forcibly cool it.”

Storing your device in a place where the temperature drops below freezing is also not good for your iPhone, so the same applies to leaving your phone inside a refrigerator, freezer, or water cooler.

“Doing so will cause condensation to form inside the phone, which will damage the device in the long run,” Brown explained.

Too hot to handle

Extreme high temperature conditions can permanently reduce battery life, according to Apple.

iOS and iPadOS devices perform best between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F).

“Low or high temperature conditions may cause your device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature,” the company states in a help page on its website.

“If your device does not display a temperature warning, you can continue using the device.”

The temperature warning is how the iPhone tries to regulate its temperature, which will protect its internal components.

STAY COOL AND KEEP GOING

So, it is smarter and easier to keep your phone in the shade and try to reduce the time spent on it.

Increase your iPhone’s battery life

“Avoid excessive use of your phone when it is exposed to direct sunlight or operating at maximum screen brightness,” Brown added.

“Playing high-performance video games or streaming videos for a long time can heat up even the latest smartphones.”

If you’re outdoors and need to check your phone, find some shade nearby and turn down the screen brightness.

The brighter the screen, the more power the phone’s battery is consuming and the hotter the phone can get.

“If you’re outdoors and need to check your phone, find some shade nearby and turn down the screen brightness,” he continued.

“If, even after turning off power-hungry apps, you find that your phone is still getting hot, turn on your phone’s built-in power saving mode.

“This mode will close background apps, reduce brightness, and allow for faster screen locking.”

iPhone owners should also consider removing thick cases that can restrict airflow around the device — as long as you’re not too clumsy or traveling on hard floors anytime soon.

Finally, do not leave your device in the car, as temperatures in parked cars can exceed the limit of 35º C.
