APPLE Pay has suffered a mysterious malfunction in which users are seeing unauthorized charges on their bank accounts, according to reports.
One user allegedly watched as $1,500 (£1,190) was withdrawn from his account in 74 quick transactions in just five minutes.
Affected users are seeing many small transactions being carried out on Apple Pay without making any purchases.
And these small charges are adding up.
“Is Apple Pay taking money from people’s cards?” wrote one affected user on X.
“I was a victim too. What do I do?”
Another responded, saying: “Wait what? I would contact Apple customer support first.”
The issue is currently isolated to Hungary alone, but is affecting most of the country’s banks, according to local media.
Several Hungarian news sites have reported that banks are being inundated with complaints about mysterious charges.
OTP Bank in Hungary, which serves around 17.5 million customers, said “massive and unjustified debits” were being made to cards at several banks.
Raiffeisen Bank, to its 18.6 million customers, said Apple was investigating the matter.
In a statement published on its website, Raiffeisen Bank wrote: “We inform our customers that due to a technical issue with an external partner, some of our customers’ bank cards may have been charged incorrectly by the Apple app store.
“Our colleagues have contacted Apple employees, the issue is being resolved.”
According to MacRumors, some of the charges are linked to subscriptions that were previously canceled.
Other charges corresponded to previous authorized transactions.
Several affected Apple customers contacted their banks to block their cards, which prevented further mysterious charges.
The Sun has contacted Apple for comment.
What is Apple Pay?
Apple Pay is Apple’s mobile payment service, built into devices.
Customers can attach their debit and credit cards to Apple Wallet and use Apple Pay to make purchases with their devices.
This means that customers do not need a physical card to make payments in stores, restaurants, gas stations and even taxis.
Instead, they can use a scanned version of the card.
Anywhere contactless payment is accepted, Apple Pay is accepted.
It’s available on iPhones, Apple Watches, iPads, Macs, and Vision Pros.
