AFTER many teases, Samsung has finally revealed everything about its long-awaited smart ring.
The Samsung Galaxy Ring comes with a host of fitness tracking tools you’d expect from a smartwatch, but there’s a lot more focus on sleep here.
So why would existing smartwatch owners bother, you might ask?
Well, first the battery: While most popular smartwatches struggle to last more than a day or two, Samsung claims the Galaxy Ring can last up to seven days on a single charge.
The other supposed benefit is comfort – people tend to take off their smartwatches at night, so a smart ring makes tracking sleep more practical.
Sun very quickly tried out the Samsung Galaxy Ring before the big launch event…
Samsung Galaxy Ring: first look
Since this is just an early look at the Galaxy Ring, we weren’t able to test the tracking capabilities.
So I’m going to focus purely on instant aesthetics.
And the first thing you notice when you pick up the Galaxy Ring is that it’s incredibly light – lighter than I expected.
It starts at 2.3g for the smallest finger size and goes up to 3g for the largest.

I’m a little conflicted about this – on the one hand, light is great for comfort, but on the other hand, a little weight gives you the assurance that it’s strong.
The Samsung Galaxy Ring is available in nine sizes – based on standard US sizes.
This is from size 5 to size 13.
Samsung will publish a sizing kit when you order a Galaxy Ring, which will ship first – you can find the best fit, confirm it with Samsung, and finally receive your Ring.
Size 12 was the best fit for my index finger, which puts me at the top of the ring sizes available.
It’s also important to note that only sizes 12 and 13 receive up to seven days of battery life – the smaller sizes last a maximum of six days.
The Galaxy Watch comes in a titanium frame with a choice of three colors: Titanium Black, Titanium Silver and Titanium Gold.
I’m instantly drawn to the elegant silver that looks like any other ring on my hand (which, by the way, I believe is a good thing).

However, I wonder again how durable it is since I don’t get that comforting, sturdy feeling.
Samsung’s support site says you should “remove the ring when lifting or handling heavy, hard objects.”
It also notes: “Cuts and scrapes may occur if you are not careful when wearing the ring, even during everyday activities. As these are not covered by warranty, handle the ring with care.”
Along the interior you will see some of the internal components and there are a series of small protrusions that are actually sensor lights.
When using the Galaxy Ring, it is comfortable and instantly much less intrusive compared to a smartwatch.
But to really evaluate the comfort I need to give it an extended ride, which I will do in a full review soon.
This also goes for the most important part, the health features, which are the Galaxy Ring’s raison d’être.
But based on looks alone, I like what I see and appreciate the opportunity to use my smartwatch less.
I’m also excited to try out the non-health features, like the ability to double-tap and dismiss the alarm (potentially dangerous too…) and double-tap to take photos, too.
