SAMSUNG is unfazed by Apple’s big AI plans for the iPhone, warning rivals will have to open their doors to keep up.

The South Korean tech giant just launched two new Flip and Fold smartphones, as well as a Ring tracker and smartwatches, all heavily infused with AI capabilities.

Companies have been racing to keep up with the AI frenzy that has ensued since ChatGPT arrived on the scene in late November 2021.

Apple arrived later, with plans to jump on the AI bandwagon in its upcoming iOS 18 update and the next iPhone.

But in a somewhat surprising development, Apple appears to be loosening its heavily closed approach to iOS by announcing a partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI.

Meanwhile, Samsung has been working with some of Google’s AI technologies.

“They can [Apple] compete with us, I would say?” James Kitto, Samsung’s head of mobile devices in the UK and Ireland, exclusively told The Sun.

“We build our own models, our own language models that run specifically on the device, but we’re also working with great partners like Google and we open the door to many others when they have the right kind of solutions that will deliver something tangible to the customer.

“I think what we’ve proven is that you can’t develop AI alone, and I think other players that will eventually come to market with AI have also discovered that this is actually a new open era that we’re in.

“We’ve always been in this, and I think others are finding that they’re going to have to start opening their doors to participate in such a fast-paced industry.”

When asked whether Samsung would consider working with OpenAI as well, James said the company will “review” and “consider” any additional potential partners as they become available.

“We are currently working with Google for certain features and certain processing, when necessary in the cloud, we use Google’s solutions as well as our own,” he continued.

“Our own solutions are built into the device.”

FREE AI UPDATES

Samsung is also planning to introduce some of its latest AI additions to previous devices via a free Android update.

The tech giant is already rolling out extras like live translation for calls and advanced image editing tools for phones launching before January’s Galaxy S24 series.

Samsung is considering charging for Galaxy AI features, but has promised to keep them free until the end of 2025 for now.

“Some of the features we launched with Flip and Fold 6 are obviously specific to the display, but other elements of the updates we are bringing will certainly roll back the existing product portfolio that can run and support Galaxy AI,” James said.

“Still completely free until the end of 2025 and then of course we will update closer to the date if there are plans to change, but currently there are no plans to change this.”

The Samsung Galaxy Flip 6 and Fold 6 hit stores on July 24th.

Who offers free updates the longest?
