Hotel expert reveals the big mistake guests always make with towels in their rooms – and it can cause problems

An etiquette expert has revealed exactly what hotel guests can do to avoid creating more work for staff.

Daily cleaning is the luxury that comes with a hotel stay, but the hard work of hotel staff should not be taken for granted.

Etiquette experts Myka Meier and Dianne Gottsman said Travel + Leisure What hotel guests can do to help.

“Never leave wet towels on the carpet or furniture, as they can damage the wood or fabric and leave wet spots (or cause mold) on the carpet that may not dry in time for the next guest,” explains Meier.

Instead, she recommends hanging used towels or leaving them “neatly stacked in the bathroom.”

Another way to avoid stains is to not use your robe as a tissue or makeup wipe. Gottsman explains that although they can be washed, some stains are difficult to remove.

Accidents can happen, but if the accident involves something sharp, like broken glass, Gottsman says collecting as many pieces as possible will help the team and prevent anyone from getting hurt.

Additionally, all rubbish can go into the bins provided.

Leaving belongings in designated areas is another great way to help staff clean up after you.

Gottsman says to leave dirty towels in a corner, shoes neatly in a corner, and clothes in your suitcase.

The bed, however, does not need to be made when guests check out.

“The bed will disassemble immediately, so you don’t have to worry about putting it away,” says Meier.

Another way to make hotel staff’s lives a little easier is to call them when you finish the room service dishes.

Leaving them outside the room can cause a tripping hazard or an undesirable smell.

At the end of the day, as long as all appliances and furniture are placed where you found them, it makes all the difference to the hotel staff.
